is the debut studio album by American hip hop duo Method Man & Redman. [1] It is the first full-length release by Method Man and Redman after many collaborations. The album continued a string of highly successful Def Jam releases in the late 1990s. The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 254,000 copies [2] and served as a bit of a precursor to the 2001 major studio film How High.

Both rappers enjoyed perhaps the height of their popularity as a tandem after the success of the album and its three charted singles. The singles were also popular videos which were mainstays on MTV and BET. The sequel to the album, Blackout!

The CD version of the album features three previously released bonus tracks; "Well All Rite Cha" also appeared on Redman's solo album, Doc's Da Name 2000, "Big Dogz" from Method Man's Tical 2000: Judgement Day and 1995's critically acclaimed single "How High".The most popular of these previous collaborations was on the song "How High" from the soundtrack to The Show.

"How High" is remixed on this album, but the album's three singles, "Y.O.U.", "Da Rockwilder" and "Tear It Off", spearheaded the highly hyped release to go platinum on January 6, 2000, [3] more than three months after the album's release. The album has also been certified platinum in Canada (100,000 copies). [4] The album has sold 1,575,000 copies to date. [2]. Blackout is also considered a landmark for both rappers and for East Coast Hip Hop.

Partners-in-rhyme and close friends, theyre the dynamic duo of beats, rhymes and blunt smoke.Their partnership has been especially fruitful too as they starred in their own stoner buddy-comedy movie How High, had their own prank show on MTV called Stung (long before Ashton Kutcher had Punkd) and even had a sitcom that briefly aired on FOX in primetime, Method & Red.They still collaborate regularly and tour with each other often.

All these endeavors in and outside of the music business can be traced back to their first collaborative album, Blackout! which celebrates its 15th anniversary this month on Sept.

28.Of course, Meth and Red built legacies of their own long before they began working together. Method Man was the breakout star during the legendary Wu-Tang Clans rise to prominence, complete with his titular track M.E.T.H.O.D.

Man on the Wus iconic debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Mentored by Erick Sermon, Redman earned a spot in the Hit Squad collective and quickly made a name for himself as a solo artist by releasing a string of classic LPs such as Whut? Thee Album and Muddy Waters.Meth and Red would eventually cross paths, oddly enough, at a Kriss Kross album release party in the early 90s, and a bond eventually developed between the Def Jam label mates.

The two would make their first mark as a duo via the now quintessential weed anthem How High for The Show soundtrack, which dropped back in 1995. Then, four years later, Method Man and Redman would drop their long-awaited album The Blackout! on Def Jam.To this day, Blackout! is a highly entertaining listen. Meth and Reds chemistry is impeccable and its easy to see why such a diverse audience gravitates toward these two colorful characters.

Their comedic timing and larger than life personas make the effort simply infectious. In celebration of the albums 15th anniversary, The Boombox takes a look back and breaks down the five best tracks from The Blackout! The albums title track Blackout makes for a perfect opening salvo from Meth and Red.

Both MCs drop a verse while sharing duties on the uproarious hook. Erick Sermon would provide the backbone for much of this project and give listeners an appetizer of the neck-snapping production hed be delivering throughout the LP.

Sermon had been Reds go-to producer for years by this point, but the track proved that Meth sounded right at home over the Green Eyed Bandits beats too. Mi Casa is a relatively short, but impactful track with funky production provided by Erick Sermon.

Meth and Red ride the beat with precision while dropping some incredibly witty lines. Redman delivers the gem, Whatchu crazy? / Since a buck tooth baby / Doc is like straight f you, pay me like Jay Z / Lazy n-s complain / Doc load up the cartridge and start kickin game like Acclaim / Those you call dogsll rat your name / Those who say they love you attack your change / Thats why I fold down four fingers / Say f the world and jimmy da Earth out with coat hangers. The Wu-Tang element of Blackout!

is kept to a minimum as RZA and Mathematics only produce four cuts on the album, but the RZA knocks it out the park during his limited opportunities as heard on Run 4 Cover. The Wu-Tang presence is in full effect here as Ghostface Killah along with Wu-affiliate Streetlife join Method Man and Redman for this grimy posse cut. As Meth declares, Yo, this aint ya granddaddys music, its hip hop, and this one is a dream come true for any hip hop head.

Despite being surrounded by three heavyweights, Streetlife delivers a quality verse to kick things off and represents himself well. Red, Meth and Ghost then drop some exceptional bars that are sure to have you playing Run 4 Cover over again. Its easy to see why Tear It Off was chosen as one of the albums singles.

Redmans catchy chorus and Erick Sermons hypnotic instrumental are sure to get a party jumping. But its Method Man who steals the show with two outstanding verses that display why hes so beloved.Kicking in you do like a steel toe, for real doe / Yall gon learn, I spit germs / When you come short on Big Worm, you get burned / Punks dont get turned, they get done and get sun Come get some, the last victim, lie in a ditch / Now who wanna fk with Hot Nick N-s chew gum with they a and pop s / Me and Funk Doc get, toxic / A bowl of rice and some chopsticks / Go make your Wu, just imposters, Meth spits. Da Rockwilder is a true no-brainer for the top track off Blackout! and its one of the greatest songs Method Man and Redman have created.

Its also a regular selection for any hip-hop head discussing a wishlist of songs that should be longer as it clocks in at just over two minutes. This track is the whole package. After being in the rap game for 16+ years most know what to expect when these 2 get on the mic and when they collaborate on songs. I think this album is a notch aboue the first "Blackout!" album (which I'd also give 4 stars).

I do like their solo works better than their collaboration albums, most of their solo's I'd give 4.5 stars. This one has some funnier tracks and some smoking tracks as well as some nice lyrical ones too. Of the 15 songs, 2 are ok and the other 13 are good or real good songs but there is no classics on here.

Guests are on 4 songs rapping and doing the chorus on 4 others. Production is solid as well. Rockwilder & Erick Sermon each do 2 songs, Bink One!, King David, Havoc, Pete Rock, Swiff D, Nasty Kutt, Ty Fyffe, and Buckwild all do 1 song. I have to say, it's not as disappointing as The Prequel by Method Man but it's up there. The first Blackout album so was great and was probably the main rap album I listened to for so many years.

If they make a Blackout 3 I will have to give it a closer listen before I buy it. I have high standards for rappers like Red and Meth but that's only because I know they are capable of so much better. When Method Man and Redman first collaborated on the method man & redman blackout back cover weed anthem "How High" in 1995, there was an unmistakable chemistry between the two.

After a couple of appearances on each other's albums in the late 90's, people were demanding a full record from them. The end result was their debut album as a duo- 1999's "Blackout!". The album was rather successful and cemented them as the heir apparent to another marijuana centered duo Cheech & Chong. Two years later, they filmed the stoner comedy "How High", which was directed by Bob Dylan's son Jesse Dylan ("American Wedding", "Kicking And Screaming").

After that film, they returned to their day jobs as both solo artists as well as members of groups- Method Man from Wu-Tang Clan and Redman from Def Squad. A decade would pass before anyone heard anything from the duo until 2009, when Method Man and Redman would release the long awaited follow up sophomore album "Blackout! 2".On this new album, there are the returns of producers from the first album.

Erick Sermon produces the songs "Dangerus MCees" and "Neva Herd Dis B4", while Rockwilder handles "Hey Zulu" and "A Lil' Bit". Pete Rock produces the first single "A Yo", while Havoc of the group Mobb Deep gets behind the boards on "I'm Dope"- a track in which the duo compares their music to a drug addiction.

They duet with Raekwon and Ghostface Killah on "Four Minutes To Lock Down", Keith Murray on "Errbody Scream" and Bun B on "City Lights". Method Man can hypnotize people with his smooth, confident flow, and is the (commercial) star of the Wu-Tang Clan. We can expect nothing less than a great album. I actually expected a little more from two such accomplished artists, but this CD leaves little room for complaint. The rhymes are all good. Both artists have similar senses of humor and clever rhymes throughout. Redman is actually the better lyricist in my opinion, but I still prefer Meth because of his voice and flow. Red and Meth compliment eachother well that way.

The switch between Meth's mellow voice and Red's thick one adds variety, as do the differences in their flows. They have a lot of different types of flows on here to match with the different beats. On DJ Scratch's "1 2 1 2," they have a brisk, on-point flow. On "Blackout!" their flows are more up-beat and energetic. On "Cereal Killer," it's more dark and sneaky.

The way they switch up their styles to match the different beats is one of the things that makes this album great and helps the songs stand out.The lyrical content itself is good and bad. Red and Meth are funny and clever, no question, but they couldn't make a serious-sounding track if their lives depended on it. None of their songs are about anything. Even though their verses are good, they start to run together a little bit. Their lines are better in some songs than others. There's nothing truly wack on here, but not very many stand-out tracks either.

"Cereal Killer" is kind of narrating a story, so that one is nice, but for the most part it's easy to lose track of the lyrics from one song to the next, even with dope lyricists like these. The thing that save this album though is that half the production is done by someone other than tha green-eyed bandit. As with the Redman album Doc's the Name 2000.

Good album but it quickly started to collect dust on the rack. This is what many people have waited for, for years. The only disappointing part is that RZA still refuses to do more than a track or two for anything. Doc's got the sickest lyrics and Meth is amazing.

His flow melts together with the track at times and he does it mo
